AP STUDIO ART- DRAWING AND 2D

Course Description:

The Drawing and 2D Portfolios address a very broad interpretation of drawing and 2D issues and media, while solving visual problems through the creation of imagery that exemplifies mastery and quality. Students work to prepare a portfolio for submission for the AP Portfolio exam by developing visual ideas that show exploration and growth that is both visually compelling and technically strong. Students are encouraged from the beginning of the class to formulate ideas for all three aspects of the portfolio: Selected Works, Range of Approaches, Sustained Investigation. Throughout the course, there is an emphasis on the process of forming or relating ideas, imagining, and conceiving mental images to produce imagery that is original and relevant to the student artist. Art making is an ongoing process and students will work to make informed critical decisions in understanding a sense of self as an artist through reflective and creative thinking about art making and design.

Instructional Goals:

  • Encourage creative and systematic investigation of formal and conceptual issues.

  • Emphasize making art as an ongoing process that involves the student in informed and critical decision making.

  • Help students develop technical skills and familiarize them with the functions of the visual elements.

  • Encourage students to become independent thinkers who will contribute inventively and critically to their culture through the making of art.
